Facebook: Friend or Foe?

It seems today that the only way people communicate is by posting or tweeting or im'ing or something.  I myself was blessed with over 1400 friends committed to making my farm the very best that it can be.  It is time to get with the times but when is enough enough?
Lately it has come to my attention that our students are on these netwroks that clearly state they are for adults only.  Every student in my eigth grade science class has a facebook page and worse yet they all want to be my "Friend"!
I have met other educators who talk about how they keep in touch with all their students online and I am left wondering if this is a good thing.  In the movie "Jurrasic Park," Jeff Goldbloom's character states of the experiments on the island park that, "we spent so much time asking IF we could do it, that we never asked, SHOULD we do it..."  Yes we can friend every student in our school.  Those students can share with us and we with them, but is this the right thing to do.
Do our students need more "Friends"? I am not sure, I think that our students need teachers, and parents and mentors?
